Good private boarding schools do help you establish contact with companies who give a sense of social responsibility by offering work experience to high school students. This can also involve payment, but a minimum. In the summer after Year 11, I took up work experience twice in London, and I had a good opportunity to see how a public relations company operates and how an interior design company serves its clients.

Work experience usually means working for one or two weeks for a company without pay to show you how people there work. You are usually assigned to receive instruction from an employee and you tag along with that employee to see how daily duties are carried out.

You are offered simple tasks under the supervision of that employee. In one or two weeks, you may not learn a lot, but you do have an opportunity to understand how things operate in various industries.

I was quite excited with the learning opportunities presented to me in my two work experience jobs. Although paid summer jobs for high school are not as readily available as the non-paying work experience, as long as you make an effort to set up arrangements ahead of time, there is no problem in finding paid opportunities. Through the school’s alumni offer, or even with help from your peers or parents, contacts are readily available.

I took a summer job in London at Jones Lang LaSalle for a month over this summer, and learned a great deal. A large corporation on a multinational scale has a great system of training opportunities for those offered a summer job. I attended meetings just like an official employee, and was given leases to read so that I could understand lease terms.

This helped me to write collection letters to tenants who were behind in the rent, or in financial terms, “clearing their outstanding balances.” I acquired so much real work experience.

There are many opportunities out there, so try to reach out to maximize your high school experience in the United Kingdom. It is important to remain an active member of your school community, and to take the initiative when it comes to getting yourself involved in activities.

I am sure that your parents will be very proud of you if you make the best use of the opportunities available to you, to justify the high tuition they have paid for you to study abroad.

SHENZHEN and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries were set to accelerate cooperation, a conference on Shenzhen-ASEAN economic and trade cooperation was told Friday.

The launch of China-ASEAN Free Trade Zone in 2010 and the development of Shenzhen-Haiphong Economic and Trade Zone were bringing historic opportunities to the economy of ASEAN countries and to Shenzhen, the conference was told.

Held at Wuzhou Guest House, the conference was attended by Shenzhen government officials and consular officials of seven ASEAN countries.

Wu Yihuan, vice mayor of Shenzhen, said ASEAN was “Shenzhen’s third-largest trade partner, and the closest emerging market to Shenzhen, and the most stable importer of Shenzhen products.”

She said the Shenzhen government would encourage more Shenzhen entrepreneurs to invest in ASEAN countries.

By the end of last year, Shenzhen investors had set up 57 enterprises in ASEAN countries, with a total investment of US$477.5 million. Businesses range from high tech to traditional manufacturing.

Shenzhen began to construct the Shenzhen-Haiphong Economic and Trade Zone in Vietnam in 2007. The project is inviting companies and the first Shenzhen investors are expected to settle there by the end of this year, according to Feng Zehui, general manager of Shenzhen Shenyue Joint Investment Co. Ltd.

Edi Yusuf, the Indonesian consul general in Guangzhou, said Shenzhen and ASEAN countries should consider collaborating in the creative industries.

Yusuf said the Indonesian Government was encouraging the film and fashion industries, and Shenzhen companies in these areas were welcome to invest in Indonesia.

The trade volume between Shenzhen and ASEAN countries rose at an annual rate of over 30 percent for the past decade.

CHINA would gradually make public government officials’ assets, Zhao Qizheng, spokesman for the annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said in Beijing yesterday.

The disclosure of officials’ assets would take time because China had nearly 10 million public servants and a large number of people working in government-affiliated institutions, Zhao told a press conference 婚紗晚裝 .

THE First China (Shenzhen) Oil Painting Expo will be held from Dec. 3 to 15 in Dafen Oil Painting Village, Longgang District.

The country’s five biggest commercial painting companies will attend the event.

It will be the first professional commercial oil painting expo in China, providing a platform for professionals to share their works and experience. Total trade volume at the expo is expected to reach 500 million yuan (US$75 million), said Huang Hu, director of the cultural industry office in Longgang District.

A wide range of exhibitions, lectures and forums will be held during the 12-day event, Thursday’s Shenzhen Evening News reported.

Exhibitors will include top painting companies, such as Huahong Holding Group and Huaxing, from areas such as Dafen, Yiwu, Xiamen and Putian. “It is the first time for all the country’s top commercial oil painting companies to attend an event together,” Huang said.

The five commercial painting giants will also sign a Dafen Declaration at the event, aiming to promote the development of commercial oil painting in China, Huang said.

Zong’s rise comes a year after the end of a long feud pitting Wahaha against French food giant Danone, which accused him of setting up a production and distribution network in parallel to their joint venture.

Danone ended up selling its 51 percent stake in the joint ventures.
